Paul
Serrato & Co. - ORIGAMI
from
Graffiti Productions: Urban Jazz - Not By The Rules
RAVE REVIEW: "Paul Serrato takes the
raw material of his life's journey and tells his story that is growing more
joyful and richer with time." - Read Turiya Mareya's complete review
at JazzReview.com
Cheryl Hughey, All About Jazz.com: "Paul Serrato manages to create a CD that celebrates the rich history of jazz, while moving the music forward into the future. It's not completely straight-ahead or devoted only to smooth jazz. The tunes possess an often refreshingly light and airy approach."
Michael
Gerchak, WUSR: "Paul Serrato & Company's latest release Origami
is solid throughout without any letdowns. Very impressive."
Michael P. Gladstone, All About Jazz.com: "...a bluesy, midtempo
suite in which there is minimal disruption of mood and pacing." Click

Marc Copeland, WFDU Jazz Influences: "I'm loving Paul Serrato & Company's Origami."

Paul Serrato
& Co. ORIGAMI from
Graffiti Productions:
Urban Jazz - Not by the Rules
Origami marks the fourth release by Paul on his independent Graffiti Productions label. It's the follow-up to More Than Red, which positioned itself at the top of the Yellow Dog jazz chart for several weeks in 2002. For anyone who has dug this and prior indie releases of Paul Serrato and Co., this new Graffiti Productions release is guaranteed not to disappoint.
The music is a mix of world rhythm, flowing melodies, piano blues and just plain straight ahead, swingin' playin'. Two vocals, one by Paul and another by L.D. Frazier, are included to top things off even more. With one notable exception, a version of Miles Davis's Solar, the music is original. In addition to Paul on piano, the New York musicians include Bryce Sebastien (bass), familiar to fans for his unique, innovative playing on other Paul Serrato releases; on congas, Henry Morales, also an ongoing member of the ensemble.
New on this record are Reggie Pittman (trumpet) and Kevin Twigg (drums). Reggie is an engaged participant in the New York band scene, including The Ellington Orchestra. Kevin hails from Long Island where he's a first call on sessions looking for professionalism and style. He's a regular member of composer David Amram's musical ensemble. Internationally, as well as in New York, L.D. Frazier is recognized as one of our most popular and emminent gospel singers. Together, these musicians, with their diverse experience, have synthesized their creativity into a statement of musical solidarity- jazz.
If there's a narrative in this music, it's in the voices of tradition of those great artists of jazz who have believed that originality and innovation are worthy goals to pursue for the enrichment of the music as well as our lives. Jazz, among other things, is legacy; and legacies here are many: Dizzy, Miles, Horace, Palmieri, Tatum, Bobby Timmons, Baden Powell, etc. etc. They have been an inspiration and continue to be.
